Joel Greenberg, who was a close friend of Rep. Matt Gaetz and who was sentenced to 11 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges including federal sex trafficking, is cooperating with the House Ethics Committee’s investigation into the Florida congressman, sources familiar with the committee’s work said. Action told ABC News.

Greenberg, who is currently in prison, served as a key witness in the Justice Department’s years-long investigation into Gaetz that ended with the Justice Department’s decision not to bring charges against him.

Sources told ABC News that Greenberg has been in contact with the Ethics Commission for weeks and provided documents related to the case.

The New York Times was the first to report on Greenberg’s cooperation with the committee.

The House investigation, which reopened last summer, continues to intensify, with the committee in recent weeks contacting several new witnesses as part of its ongoing investigation into the Florida congressman, sources said.

In a statement, Greenberg’s lawyer, Fritz Schiller, told ABC News that Greenberg “has cooperated and will cooperate with any request from Congress.”

Gaetz denied all wrongdoing. A spokesperson for the congressman said in a statement: “The Department of Justice received the same material, deemed it unreliable, and declined to press charges. The press should not be laundering libel from people in prison.”

Greenberg, a former Seminole County tax collector, reached a plea agreement with investigators in May 2021 in which he pleaded guilty to several federal crimes, including sex trafficking of a minor and introducing her to other “adult men” who also had sex with her while she was having sex. He was a minor.

He also agreed to provide “substantial assistance” to Justice Department prosecutors as part of their ongoing investigation into Gaetz and others, according to sources familiar with the arrangement.
