House Republicans issued articles of impeachment against Mayorkas over his handling of the southern border

On Sunday, Republicans in the House of Representatives issued two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, accusing him of “deliberate and systematic refusal to comply with the law” and “violating the public trust.”

“These articles make a clear, compelling and irrefutable case for the impeachment of Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas,” Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green, R-Tenn., said in a statement.

The Department of Homeland Security maintains that no high crimes or misdemeanors were ever committed under the Biden administration and that the House GOP-led investigation is “devoid of evidence.”

Administration officials point to a number of legal experts, some of whom were provided by the committee, who say the constitutional grounds for impeachment have not been met.

The new articles of impeachment are scheduled to be reviewed in committee on Tuesday, after which they will have to be approved by the full Senate in order for Mayorkas to be tried in the Senate and possibly removed.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said Friday that such a vote would take place “as soon as possible.”
