The Department of Justice has charged former Oath Keepers member Ray Epps for his participation in the January 6 riot. Epps became the target of conspiracy theories spread by several Republicans who sought to accuse him of being a secret federal agent who urged Trump supporters to storm the US Capitol.

Epps was charged Monday with one misdemeanor count of disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted area via a criminal information, which is often a signal that a defendant is willing to plead guilty.

Epps has long denied being an informant or a federal agent, including in his testimony before the House Select Committee on January 6. He has since filed a defamation lawsuit against Fox News and former host Tucker Carlson over repeated clips spreading the conspiracy theory he was acting undercover, which he said led to threats and harassment that turned his life upside down.
