An 8-year-old boy died after being struck by a car in Peoria on Thursday, according to police.

Police said they responded to an accident near 124th Street and West Gentle Rain Drive on Thursday around 3:13 p.m.

The preliminary investigation showed that the child left the car while it was driving, and the car hit him while it was moving on the road, according to police. Police said the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene during the investigation.

The child, who was a Peoria resident, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and later died, officials said.

“Loss of life is always difficult, but a tragedy like this can impact not only the family of the child involved, but the entire community as well,” Peoria Police Chief Tom Intrieri said in a statement.

“I ask that you keep the affected family and community in your thoughts and prayers moving forward.”

Speed ​​has been ruled out as a factor, but possible damage remains under investigation, according to police. No arrests or citations have been made at this time.
