Fountain Haus, an LGBTQ-friendly anchor in Westport that consisted of three floors, multiple dance floors and a rooftop “pool deck,” has closed.

“Time flies, and along the way, we have encountered some more challenges than we expected,” club owner David Brinkerhoff said in a statement. “Despite the hard work and dedication of our team, we have reached a point where it is no longer possible to keep Fountain Haus open.”

The last night of work was Saturday.

Brinkerhoff and partners Dan Meiners and Ryan Overberg Fountain House opened at 401 Westport Road, on the corner of Broadway, in 2022, which was previously home to HopCat and TikiCat. The 13,000-square-foot space has dining and multiple bars. With ceramic tiles and a “deep end” sign, the “pool deck” is designed to make customers feel like they are partying in an empty pool.

The Fountain Haus' rooftop pool deck has been renovated to resemble the interior of an empty pool, complete with shiny ceramic tiles.

The club has hosted drag shows and dance parties like Queer Terror, been a hub during Pride events, and describes itself as “one of the largest queer and allied spaces” in the Midwest.

David Hollins, a former minority partner in the company, claimed in a lawsuit last August that the owners had not repaid his $50,000 investment in the club, which according to court filings amounted to a 2% stake in the company. His attorney, Lance Lowenstein, told The Star on Monday that the lawsuit “was settled a few weeks ago to the satisfaction of my client.” Lowenstein said he did not know if the settlement was related to the closing.

“We can’t thank everyone who has been with us on this journey enough — our amazing team, every person who has walked through our doors, and our community partners,” Brinkerhoff added. “You are the heartbeat of Fountain Haus. We are so proud of what we have built together and so grateful to be part of the Kansas City story.
