The mayor of a South Carolina town was killed in a car crash, officials said
A South Carolina mayor was killed Saturday in a car crash that sent another person to the hospital, officials said.
Master Trooper William Bennett of Clarendon County Police said the collision between the two vehicles occurred at approximately 10:45 a.m. in Clarendon County. South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Junius was driving a 2010 Chevrolet Impala that collided with a 2013 Dodge Charger at the interstate. Governor Richardson Road and Liberty Hill Road, according to Bennett. The vehicle then veered off the right side of the road and crashed into a ditch, Bennett said.
Both Junius and the Dodge driver were taken to an area hospital, where Junius later died, according to Bennett. More information about the Dodge driver’s condition is not available.
No other injuries were reported.
He mourned the death of Junius Clarendon County School Districtwho said he previously served as a board member for 20 years before becoming Summerton’s first Black mayor in 2022.
“That’s the way it is Deep sadness and deep respect “We announce the passing of Mayor Tony Junius, a dedicated and respected member of our school district family,” school district officials said in a news release. “Mayor Junius…(leaves) behind a legacy of unwavering commitment to improving the school and Summerton communities of Clarendon County.”
The school board said Junius was an active member of the community and his dedication extended beyond the school walls.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of Mayor Junius, who was an important member of our school board and a cherished pillar of our education community,” Dr. Shawn Johnson, superintendent of the Clarendon County School District, said in the release. “His dedication to our schools, commitment to educational excellence, and passion for student success were unparalleled. Likewise, the impact on our region and the lives of those it touched will be felt for many years to come.
“We have lost an amazing person, but his legacy will continue to inspire us all by completing the projects he fought for in the Summerton community. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.”

“Our Summerton community is wounded at this moment,” Junius said after eight people were shot and one of them, a 32-year-old woman, was killed. “We are praying for the families involved in this tragedy.”
There was no information on whether the driver of the Junius or the Dodge was wearing seat belts.
No information was available about the cause of the two cars’ collision, but the Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident.
Until January 15, 26 people will die on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 999 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least one person died in a Clarendon County crash in 2024, according to DPS data. DPS reported that 14 deaths were reported in the county in 2023.
