The accident happened shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Pineville-Matthews Road, near Kettering Road.

MEDIC says they transported one person to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Veteran crime reporter Glenn Counts went to the scene and was able to speak with an employee off camera, who said he believed the suspect was trying to steal from Walmart when an employee got into a fight.

The witness says the employee got help from a family member. The suspect allegedly ran to his car and grabbed a gun before returning to the store and shooting the worker. He also told Counts that the victim seemed fine.

Linda Smith is a regular customer and also knows the victim’s family. She told Counts that her thoughts are with them.

“They are wonderful people; they are great; They will help you with anything; “They’re very good,” Smith said. “I lost my wallet somewhere, and I came back the next day, but they had moved out of the way.”

Pineville Police Department officers say they have one person in custody but have not confirmed whether or not the employee is a victim.

Details are limited at this time.
