Police issue a warning after a break-in and attempted sexual assault in Belmont Cragin


Police issued a community alert after a man broke into a building Friday in Belmont Cragin and attempted to sexually assault a woman, police said.

The assailant entered a basement apartment where the woman was sleeping in the 2600 block of North Lavergne Street, according to a news release Saturday.

Police said the man beat her and tried to sexually assault her. She fought the man, who then fled south on North Lavergne Street.

Police described the attacker as black, 20 to 30 years old, between 5-foot-8 and 6-foot-6 and weighing between 150 and 220 pounds. At the time of the attack, he was wearing black pants, a black hooded jacket, and black shoes.

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at 312-746-6554.
