An HHI resident has been injured in a shooting following a series of car burglaries in the North Island early Saturday
A 55-year-old North Hilton Head man is in hospital after he was shot by an unidentified man in his yard early Saturday morning. Investigators from Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office It is believed the shooting may be linked to a series of car break-ins in the same neighborhood.
Deputies responded just before 4 a.m. Saturday to a home on Wright Place and found a 55-year-old resident with two gunshot wounds, according to department spokesperson Maj. Angela Viens. He was treated by first responders and transported to Savannah Area Hospital.
The homeowner told police he heard a noise outside and when he opened the door he saw two people standing near cars parked in his driveway. One of those people shot the man, according to a Saturday morning alert from the Sheriff’s Office.
Police later learned that “at least five” suspects had pulled down car doors near Wright Place just before the shooting. Several vehicle burglaries were reported in the area later Saturday morning.
Only two people were seen at the victim’s home during the shooting, but the group of five were likely “working a concert” in the neighborhood, according to Vince.
The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who lives on the north end of Hilton Head and has surveillance systems to check their camera footage from the hours before and after 4 a.m. Saturday. Investigators are looking for “any suspicious persons” walking or pulling car doors, as well as any vehicles driving recklessly immediately after the shooting.
