2023 broke the record for train travel in North Carolina

More and more people are deciding to take a train ride in North Carolina.

A North Carolina Department of Transportation report shared Tuesday says 2023 set a record for the number of passengers who rode trains in the state.

In 2023, more than 641,000 passengers took intercity passenger trains in the state. This includes people taking the train from the Amtrak station in Charlotte to stations like Salisbury and Raleigh.

It’s the second year in a row the state has set a record for train travel — in 2022, about 522,000 travelers rode North Carolina by train.

NCDOT says adding a fifth round-trip route between Raleigh and Charlotte has helped increase the number of riders. The train also created special stops for the North Carolina State Fair, the Lexington BBQ Festival, and football games.
