Two Williamsburg residents have been arrested and face multiple charges, including murder, in connection with the disappearance of a 4-year-old girl, the Whitley County Police Department announced Friday.

Brittany Slaughter, 24, and Adam Hayes, 34, are charged with murder, abuse of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence in connection with the disappearance of Chloe Darnell. he wrote in a Facebook post Friday.

Chloe was in Slaughter’s custody and her family originally reported her missing from the Offa Lane/Canada Town community in late September, officials said.

Officials posted earlier Wednesday that they are searching for a 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer that they believe may be connected to the case and are asking for the public’s help. The car was located a day later, but neither Slaughter nor Chloe were found.

Officials later posted that Slaughter was arrested Thursday night, but they have not yet been able to locate the child.

In an update on Friday, officials said they had found remains they believe were Chloe’s and sent them to the medical examiner’s office in Frankfort for authentication and autopsy.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed, officials said.
