Police arrested Lawrence’s man, wanted for murder, after a “protracted” standoff on Wednesday
The hours-long standoff at the Lawrence apartment complex ended Wednesday afternoon with the arrest of a 63-year-old murder suspect, according to police.
Officers were notified late Tuesday that a man wanted for a violent felony offense in Wichita was likely in an apartment in 1400 pieces of Bristol TerraceSgt. Drew Finley Lawrence Police he said in a statement.
Finlay said that after a “long” standoff, the suspect, Kevin L. Harris, of Lawrence, left home around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
“The extreme heat posed many great challenges, but we are grateful to report that this incident in Lawrence did not result in any injuries or require anyone to be medically treated,” Finley said. Temperatures reached triple digits in Lawrence on Wednesday afternoon.
During the encounter, the tactical teams were called to the area where a perimeter was established and neighbors were interviewed. An apartment building was evacuated because Harris initially refused to surrender, according to police.
Finley said police suspected Harris was armed when the negotiators were removed. Finlay said a woman who was in an apartment with him was allowed to leave hours before Harris finally surrendered.
Harris was turned over to Wichita Police to be brought to Sedgwick County on Wednesday.
