A multi-vehicle crash with injuries has blocked traffic on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland
BALTIMORE (AP) — A multi-vehicle accident and injuries closed all lanes on the heavily traveled U.S. 50 Bay Bridge in Maryland on Saturday and motorists were advised to expect significant delays, authorities said.
The Maryland Transportation Authority previously said on Twitter that the accident on the westbound lanes led to the bridge being closed.
The transportation authority said in a later post that eastbound and westbound traffic was alternating on the eastbound bridge, but the westbound bridge remained closed.
Authorities said several people were taken to area hospitals. The number of injured people and the number of vehicles involved were not immediately revealed.
Traffic cameras showed authorities vehicles with flashing lights and no traffic moving on the westbound lanes of the bridge.
The Anne Arundel County Police Department said motorists should expect significant delays in Annapolis and Kent Island for an extended period of time.
Also known as the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge, it crosses the Chesapeake Bay. The transportation authority said on its website that the line connects the eastern coast of Maryland with the urban areas of Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington.
