Stock Market Today: US Futures Flat; Dollar and Bitcoin hold recent gains

  • US stock futures were stable, as European stocks rose and Chinese markets reversed early declines.

  • Finance and Synchrony Financial detect pre-market declines in the S&P 500 Index.

  • The dollar and Bitcoin stabilized, while oil prices rose modestly.

U.S. stock futures were mostly flat in early trading Thursday, as European stocks posted modest gains and Chinese markets rebounded from an earlier selloff.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 closed little changed, still on track for its best month since June.

The dollar was stable, holding on to its recent gains, while Bitcoin was little changed at $42,717 in the cryptocurrency market. Oil prices were slightly higher.

Discover Financial Services, Synchrony Financial and Capital One Financial led premarket declines among S&P 500 stocks, while gainers included AMD, Valero Energy and Boeing.

Market overview:

  • S&P 500 futures were little changed at 4,774 as of 5:05 a.m. EST, while comparable contracts on the Nasdaq 100 rose 0.3% to 16,913.25.

  • European stocks saw some progress, with the Euro Stoxx 50 index rising 0.1%. The German DAX 40 index rose by 0.3%, and the French CAC 40 index rose by 0.5%.

  • In Asia, the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong rose 0.75%, while the Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.4%. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index was almost unchanged at 35,466.20 points. India’s Nifty 50 index fell 0.5%.

  • In the cryptocurrency market, Bitcoin settled at $42,717. The price of ether rose slightly to $2,536.50.

  • The dollar index, which tracks the US currency against a basket of currencies, settled near its highest level in more than a month.

  • The 10-year Treasury yield was little changed at 4.08%. Brent crude rose by 0.35% to $73.30 per barrel.
